HIV Prevention Care and Support Program for Female Prisoners in Central Jail, KathmanduAs a part of multi sectoral intervention of Prerana on HIV prevention and care, Prerana has beenimplementing HIV prevention, care and support program for female prisoners in the central jail inKathmandu. Through realizing the gravity of the vulnerability of prisoners, Prerana initiated the HIVprevention and care program for female prisoners as another intervention strategy on HIV & AIDS.The program has been implemented since December 2008 and the major activities includesensitizations, orientations to the female prisoners, NAIKEs, prison authorities and securitypersonnel The is also an Income generation activities for female prisoners and other empowermentprograms. Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) services have been initiated in the central jailtargeting the prisoners in coordination with the jail hospital staff. Key activities under the project are: • Sensitization to Prison Authorities and NAIKEs and prison inmates • Mobilization of 10 Peer Educators and 10 self help group members among prison inmates •VCT and STI services and referrals for CD4 count, ART, viral load and other treatment support to identified PLHIV inmates •Support to PLHIV inmates through referrals to access tratment, care and support services. •Support on Income Generating Activities (IGAs) to prison inmates •Training on HIV & AIDS, Gender, human Rights, sexual reproductive health, basic counseling andpsychosocial and trauma counseling etc •Capacity building of prison authorities and hospital for the sustainability.
