A short history of Prerana
1997: Prerana was established
as the first NGO in Nepal to provide care and support to PLWHAs.
This was at a time when PLWHAs faced great challenges from discrimination
in the community.
1997-98 300 benefited from a
care and support providing medical support and treatment, a programme
funded by SNV Nepal.
1997-2000 Establishment and promotion
of telephone hotline and individual counselling services, promoted
through national newspapers, cinema advertising and promotion in
hospitals.
1999 Continuation of care and
support, and a food fund programme supported by GTZ providing basic
food needs to members of Prerana.
2000-2001 Programme to strengthen
the involvement of PLWHAs in Nepal , a UNDP South Asia project on
HIV and development the NGO small grant programme “strengthening
the involvement of PLWHAs in Nepal .”
2002-2003 Awareness and sensitisation
programme and classes in nine different areas in Nepal including
Gokarna, Budhanikantha, Kathmandu, and four hospital staffs of Teku
hospital, Bir hospital, Tu teaching hospital and Patan hospital.
2004 Programme for skill building
for 25 PLWHAs funded by the National Council for AIDS and STD control.
2005 Stigma Discrimination Reduction
Programme from 15 January to 15 September 2005 . Funded by FHI/
Nepal
Programme for skill building for 20 PLWAHS funded by the National
Council for AIDS and STD control. April 15 to Jun 15-2005
HIV/AIDS/STI Youth Prevention Programme Funded by Elton John AIDS
Foundation of UK from July 15-2005 to Jun 15 2006

2005 onwards Capacity building
and organizational development activities with the support of Voluntary
Service Overseas (VSO UK/Nepal) to strengthen Prerana’s organizational
and management infrastructure by providing full-time volunteer as
a management advisor.
Jan 2007-Dec 2007 HIV/AIDS prevention
and awareness program in 42 govt. and private schools of Kathmandu
Valley funded by Mercury Phoenix Trust, UK. Provided HIV/AIDS prevention
and awareness sensitization program to 1148 higher secondary students
of Kathmandu Valley.
Jan 2007-Nov 2007; project to
prevent HIV among Injecting Drug Users and inspect the existing
circumstances of IDUs in project areas. The project is delivered
through a network of peer outreach educators and former IDU's, in
the Kathmandu Valley. Funded by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime
(UNODC), New Delhi.
10th -15th March 2007 Community
Home Based Care training to Prerana’s staff which also included
staff from other 10 PLWHA support groups and organization.
21st-25th March 2007 - Peer Volunteer
Lesson Plan for Prevention of HIV transmission among Injecting drug
users- training to Prerana’s staff.
Nov 2006 onwards - Residential
Based Care and support center for PLWHA families under comprehensive
package for PLWHA funded by DFID/UNDP. Provided services to 251
PLWHAs infected and affected till the end of March 2008
